HOMEHUNTERS are getting their bidding paddles ready for what could be the biggest auction weekend in Brisbane’s history as they scramble for the keys to a new home by Christmas.

More than 160 properties are set to go under the hammer over three days from Friday as the city’s housing market hits unprecedented price heights and buyer demand continues to drum up competition.

This property at 7 Boston St, Clayfield, is going to auction on Saturday.

Brisbane’s auction clearance rate is now averaging 80 per cent — equal to Sydney and Melbourne’s for the first time ever — with 55 homes sold from 67 last Saturday and a median sale price of $1.2 million.

In the September quarter, there were 2107 auctions scheduled in Brisbane, which is nearly 30 per cent above the 10-year quarterly average, according to CoreLogic.

This property at 11 Bess St, Windsor, is going to auction on Saturday.

It comes after Queensland’s auction record was broken this month when a Noosa house at 41 Picture Point Crescent sold under the hammer for $16.45 million.

Place Estate Agents’ auctioneer Paul Curtain said the number of Brisbane vendors choosing to take their properties to auction was higher than ever.

This property at 41 Picture Point Cres, Noosa Heads, sold for a Queensland auction record of $16.45m.

“We are bringing a high volume of stock to the market and this biggest auction

weekend is giving buyers the opportunity to buy and settle before Christmas,” Mr Curtain said.

“We are anticipating another wave of interstate and overseas buyers over this busy

three-day period.

This property at 14 Merrell St, Holland Park West, is going to auction on Saturday.

“You really are at risk of underselling your property at the moment if you don’t take it to auction.”

CoreLogic head of research Eliza Owen said auctions were no longer exclusive to Sydney and Melbourne.

This property at 10 Patrick St, Norman Park, is going to auction on Saturday.

“Not only have volumes been higher across Brisbane… but clearance rates have been well above historic averages through the September quarter, which may cement auctions as a more popular sales method,” Ms Owen said.

Amanda and Gavin Carle have chosen to auction their five-bedroom, renovated Queenslander at 89 Palm Avenue, Shorncliffe.

This property at 89 Palm Ave, Shorncliffe, is going to auction on Saturday.

“I just think the house is so unique,” Mrs Carle said. “Everyone has their own master suite, and we really tried to push the boundaries because we do have five cars, so there’s room for the boat and caravan.”
