Hendra house in top form ahead of auction day race for the keys

This house at 41 Sefton Rd, Hendra is going to auction on November 13.

ROSS and Riki McConaghy live on the cusp of three suburbs.

Their renovated home at 41 Sefton Rd is addressed in Hendra, but Ascot is on the other side of their fence and Clayfield is across the road.

Three suburbs converge around this street.

“We’re more Ascot in terms of the feel and we’re walking distance to the Eagle Farm Racecourse and yet you’re not down amongst the trainers and stables,” Mr McConaghy said.

The couple were looking for a renovation project when the price dropped on a quaint three-bedroom deceased estate 10 years ago.

There is room to show off your favourite artwork.

“We’d been watching that house for quite a while,” he said. “The executers were living in New York and London and there was a price drop and we signed the contract that morning.”

The couple had two children at the time and lived in the circa-1910 house for 18 months before working on a plan to bring the ‘absolute perfect renovator on 32 perches’ into the 21st century.

BEFORE: The house as it looked in 2010.

“It only had an L-shaped veranda across the front and left, so we lifted it a metre and slid it to the left and extended the veranda down the right hand side. Then we extended the house out the back to add the new kitchen, dining and living area and the master bedroom and ensuite.

Open-plan living areas.

And then we built in all of upstairs with the same footprint, and added a study, two bedrooms, a movie and a living room and we increased the size of the house to about 600 sqm.”

The brief to the architect was to open the home to the outdoors, with bi-fold doors and windows above the kitchen sink that open right up.

Rooms were set up to be reversible, like the downstairs gym.

The customised gym.

A cinema was a must for the kids, with a decent sized pool and the separation of living spaces.

Outdoor entertaining overlooks the in-ground swimming pool.

“We had au pairs for the kids so the kitchenette downstairs was great for that and we maximised the use of the yard.”

Along the way they picked up some signature pieces to decorate the home. Like the fireplace they bought from an AFL player in Melbourne.

“We talked him out of it.”

Leadlights in the bay window also came from a demolition site in Melbourne.

The deep deck is perfect for entertaining.

During the eight month renovation, the couple had their third child which was a rite of passage for their eldest to inherit a downstairs bedroom when the family returned to the house.

A second renovation last year has included the creation of a new living space around the upstairs fireplace with Wyer and Craw cabinetry.

The fireplace is now a feature in the newest room of the house.

“My favourite part of the house is the living room that we’ve just finished. There’s a nice feel to it, cool and cosy and calm and it’s a lovely room with all the built-in cabinets. That space was an open space at the end of the hallway and it was a wasted area, so we have enclosed it and that has given the hallway a grander feel.

“This has been a great family home, it was designed as a home for our family. Every room in the house flows nicely and we use every room, there is no dead space. We have tried to make it a functional house to live in.”

The couple are moving on to a new renovation project and will take their home to auction next month.

“I’ve renovated five or six homes but this has been the longest,” he said.

“Now I need a new project to satisfy my creative need to make something beautiful.”
