An Aladdin’s cave of building materials and tools underneath a two-storey house stuck in the seventies sold with the cry of “Oi!” at auction.

A man in his sixties made the final call for 30 Jolimont St, Sherwood which had odd-patterned wallpaper throughout, partial wood panelling and shag pile carpet.

All that was lacking to cap off the seventies interior theme was a black and white TV, although underneath the floorboards it was far more intriguing on Saturday.

Stored above head height was as much timber as you’d find in a family-owned hardware store, not to mention a massive pile of timber-framed windows and an assortment of tools.

It was the first time the house had been put on the market in more than half a century, said auctioneer Justin Nickerson.

“There would have been enough material under the house to almost build another house. The material was everywhere,” Mr Nickerson said.

“He was an old builder and he used to store all the material at his house and all the material was left at the property.

“The house was sold ‘as is’ and included everything in storage.”

Bidding for the two-storey, brick-veneer home started at $800,000 with the eventual winner joining in proceedings early before watching six other interested parties go to battle.

At the death knock, the cry of “Oi!” could be heard across the large crowd that had gathered to watch the auction as the final bid of $1.275m was made.

“The last bid was a man yelling ‘Oi!’ and that is so Australian and also so rare to place a bid,” Mr Nickerson said.

“He sneaked back into bidding at the last second.”

Across the river, there was not even anyone prepared to say “Oi!” at 36 Benecia St, Wavell Heights where a crowd of about a dozen gathered to watch it go under the hammer on Saturday morning.

The three-bedroom home in the popular northside suburb has an entertaining deck that offers ‘spectacular Brisbane sunsets over Mount Nebo and the D‘Augilar Ranges’.

Yet the only bids were made on behalf of the vendors at $1m and $1.2m before being passed in.

Oddly, within minutes of the auction closing, Charlesworth Real Estate agent Tony Charlesworth received a text from a local buyer asking if the sale had passed in.

“We had a lot of interest from locals but they are not conditioned to auction sales and also are gun shy of interstate buyers,” Mr Charlesworth said.

“I’ve just had a text now from a local saying they’d be interested in discussions if it gets passed in.”

The house is now on the market with offers above $1.2m.
