Inside tennis hall of famer Lleyton Hewitt’s designer coastal retreat

Retired tennis champ Lleyton Hewitt and wife Bec Hewitt sold their Toorak mansion for $15.2m two months after buying in Queensland for less than a third of that price.

With his long-awaited induction ceremony into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt can live anywhere he wants, but chooses to call Qld home.

The former world number one, Wimbledon, US Open, and Davis Cup champion was just 20 when he hit the top ranking – the youngest player ever to do so, according to the ITHF which has a massive ceremony planned for his induction on Saturday Eastern Time.

“Hewitt’s induction celebrations were deferred to 2022 due to travel restrictions,” the ITHF said in a statement, a time that saw the family join thousands of others who left southern capitals in Australia to make Queensland their new home.

With their son Cruz rising in the tennis world, Hewitt and wife Bec shifted their family north into the Sunshine State to the Gold Coast.

After spending months in a rental – which has been listed fully furnished at $2250 a week – the couple snapped up a luxurious four bedroom Burleigh Heads escape on the same street. Property records show their beach suburb home had been sold only three months before to another buyer for $3.75m, with the couple then paying top dollar to secure it in September for $4.305m.

The home has coastal vibes in one of the hottest parts of the coast.

It’s a significantly more modest property than their five bedroom mansion in Melbourne prestige suburb, Toorak, which they sold for $15.2m within two months of buying in Qld – over three times what they paid in Burleigh Heads.

Tellingly the Hewitt’s coastal escape does not have a tennis court. Not that they’d need one given his name alone virtually guarantees VIP access to any court in Australia, let alone Qld.

The home is in the heart of Burleigh – a cosmopolitan part of the coast with a thriving cafe and restaurant scene, and stunning sand and surf on offer.

Bi-fold windows and doors are part of the charm.

Listing agent Conal Martin of Kingfisher Realty Burleigh Heads – who sold the property in June, before it was onsold to the Hewitts – described it as having a Palm Springs coastal type design with irrigated greenery, natural stone feature walls and an open plan with indoor-outdoor flow.

“Spend your summer nights by the outdoor kitchen, BBQ and beer fridge, watching your family play in the pool through the custom infinity glass pool window or around the fire roasting marshmallows on those cozier winter nights.”

Clean simple lines across the entire property.

It may not have a tennis court, but the home has the ultimate Qld luxury item, a built-in firepit with seating.

“This is a place where you can escape the bustle of everyday life,” was how he sold it.

The truly international home has American oak floors throughout, Smeg dolce designer appliances, custom Australian brass tapware, Italian Venetian plaster and terrazzo tiles, and Santorini Clay stone feature walls.

The ITHF statement said Hewitt will be the 34th Australian to become a Hall of Famer.

“Induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame is tennis’ ultimate honour, representing the sum of a person’s accomplishments as being among the greatest and most impactful in sport’s history. Just 267 athletes and contributors from throughout tennis history have received this honour.”
