Shelley Craft has built her forever home in Byron Bay.
Host of The Block 2021 Shelley Craft has opened herself up to be judged, showing off her new beach house built at the site of what was once the Byron Bay whaling station.
An empty block of land when she and husband Christian Sergiacom bought the site five years ago, Ms Craft was keen to bury the grizzly history of the site which had been used for whaling from 1954 to 1962.

Instead she’s drawn on Byron Bay’s industrial roots and turned the site into a home they’ve named Pacifico House – a contemporary, light-filled, forever home.
“We fell in love with the idea of creating a house that was not just a family home, but also a beach retreat and private sanctuary,” Ms Craft said. “The materials and the interior style we chose have more of an industrial flavour.”
“It’s not your average beach house. We wanted to create a family home that was cool to look, comfortable to live in and creative in its use of products, all while being sympathetic to the natural environment.”

She said air circulation and natural light were so important when building or renovating, using a mix of raked ceilings, louvred windows, skylights and sliding glass doors to get there.
“We are so happy with how it turned out. We wanted to create a family home that was cool and comfortable, while being sympathetic to the natural environment, and I feel like we succeeded.”

She used Gyprock Supaceil plasterboard to on her spectacular ceilings, and Gyprock Superchek plasterboard for many of the interior walls.
“I know what a difference the different products can make to the comfort and liveability of a home,” she said.

“I think our ceilings are impressive and command attention as you enter the home. We love opening the house up and having such an expansive area to entertain and enjoy.”
The beach house has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a room they call the surfclub change room, done up in Cemintel Barestone in Graphite and Gyprock Aquachek.
“It’s such a great look and feel. With two shower heads and a built-in timber bench, it’s where we rinse off after coming out of the pool and coming back from the beach.”
