Cathy and Trevor Lay, with their dog Scooby, have sold their house in Beerwah in the electorate of Fisher.
“MINDBLOWING” house price growth in the federal seat of Fisher has allowed Trevor Lay to retire early.
The Australia Post veteran and his wife, Cathy, have just sold their house at 11 Featherwood Crescent in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Beerwah for $980,000 — around $500,000 more than they spent on it five years ago.
“It’s mindblowing to be quite honest,” Mr Lay said. “We’re absolutely astonished with the price we got for it.”
The Lays bought the 650 sqm block for $215,000 in 2017 and spent around $235,000 on the build.
“I sort of thought over five years, it might rise $200,000 to $250,000 in price, so we were hoping for around $700,000,” Mr Lay said. “We’re just blown away with the price.”
New data from PropTrack reveals the electorate of Fisher has recorded the highest rise in house price growth of any federal electorate in Queensland since the last election.
This house at 11 Featherwood Cres, Beerwah, just sold for $980,000.
The median house price for the region has jumped 58 per cent since 2019 to $870,000.
Beerwah’s median house price is slightly more affordable at $695,501 — 50 per cent higher than it was three years ago.
“It’s certainly allowed us to do what I wanted to do, which means I’ll be retiring at Christmas,” Mr Lay said.
The couple has decided to make the move north to the small coastal town of Bargara, in the LNP-held federal electorate of Hinkler, where they will build a new home mortgage-free.
“It’s allowed us to enjoy our retirement. There won’t be any mortgage and we’ll have some funds in our super to allow us to live in retirement reasonably.”
Mr Lay said he was happy with his local LNP member, but doubted politics had anything to do with the growth in house prices in the area.
“I’ve got to be honest, I think Covid has had a lot of effect,” he said. “I think there’s been a lot of southerners who’ve wanted to shift to Queensland.
“We looked for a year before we actually built. Beerwah was the perfect choice where we’re 25 minutes from the beach and 25 minutes from Maleny, Montville, and only a 75km drive to Brisbane.”
