AFL legend Lance “Buddy” Franklin and wife Jesinta have already put down less than a year’s worth of his current salary on a home in Queensland.
The rumour mill has been abuzz over the AFL star’s future after News Corp revealed the Sydney Swans current 2023 offer to him was about $500,000, less than half of what he was being paid in 2022 – setting off speculation he could be on the hunt for a third club when his nine-year, $10m contract ends this season.

Mr Franklin and wife Jesinta – who is from the Gold Coast and has been vocal about spending time in the Sunshine State with family – already own a beach apartment in Queensland, which they can escape to, immediately if they wanted.
The Sunday Telegraph reported over the weekend that the couple could be headed to the Sunshine State with their luxury ground floor Sydney apartment, bought for $5m mid last year, believed to be available for a possible offmarket sale.
Their Qld escape is a luxury beach apartment one block from the water between Kirra and Bilinga that they paid $790,000 for. The amount is about as much as the 1,000-plus goalkicking great is reportedly asking the Sydney Swans for in the 2023 playing year.
Property records show the couple put their money down on the apartment in the beach suburb one month before Covid-19 broke out in Australia and caused widespread restrictions.
It was designed to be the perfect lockup-and-leave property, with just 20 residential units in it.
Designed by award-winning architects, BDA Architecture, all buyers in the buildings – regardless of whether their unit was a two bedroom with multipurpose room, three bedder or either of the double-storey penthouses – were given free customisation of their homes via an interior design package from the developers the Lacey Group.
The building is topped by a residents-only rooftop sanctuary with swimming pool, lounge, barbecue area and cinema room.
Mr Franklin – who played eight years with Hawthorn Football Club before moving to the Sydney Swans – has previously said he loves getting back to Perth, where he and wife Jesinta bought his father a $340,000 four-bedroom house four years ago.
But Mrs Franklin, a former Miss Universe Australia and soon-to-be AFL accredited agent, has a soft spot for the Gold Coast, her favourite coastal holiday spot “because it’s my home town”.
“Whenever I have time off, I love to go back and spend time with my family at the beach,” she told Escape. “People often think of the theme parks and the whole Surfers Paradise thing, but don’t really look beyond that. We have so many beautiful beaches and waterfalls. I think the average traveller would be surprised.”
