A DECADE ago, Eight Mile Plains was not a suburb on Robyn and David Underwood’s radar when they were looking to buy a family home.

Today, the southern Brisbane suburb, bordered by Sunnybank and McGregor, is in high demand among house hunters thanks to urban sprawl, transport upgrades making it easier to access the city and sought-after schools.

This property at 107 Bleasby Rd, Eight Mile Plains, is on the market.

With a median house price of $954,000, Eight Mile Plains has seen the number of sales over $1 million slowly increase over the past 10 years.

Now, even humble brick homes in the suburb can command more than seven figures.

The Underwoods bought their house on nearly half a hectare at 107 Bleasby Road in January 2010 after looking for a family home with privacy, space and accessibility.

The property is appealing because it is a large, family home on acreage just 30 minutes from the CBD.

“We were pleasantly surprised,” Mrs Underwood said. “It wasn’t really a suburb on our radar, but it was just the accessibility to everything, in combination with the larger sized block that really appealed to us.

“And I must admit that’s going to be the hardest thing to leave. Everything’s so accessible. Schools, but also access to the city — the busway is fantastic — and the shops.”

There’s even an inground, outdoor spa.

The Underwoods’ three sons all went to school on the southside, so took the bus every day.

“We are very typical empty nesters,” Mrs Underwood said. “All three children have moved on and are doing their own thing. We bought this place off a family with three children.

“It will be sad (to sell), but we’d like to see it used to its full potential.”

Owen Chen of Place Sunnybank, who is marketing the property, said the number of sales over $1 million in Eight Mile Plains had increased “dramatically” in the past 18 months.

Mr Chen said he had seen the suburb’s demographic change from an older generation to a younger generation of families in their late 30s looking for more space.

This house at 23 Collett St, Eight Mile Plains, is for sale.

He said the suburb was appealing because it offered acreage so close to the city, which was why 107 Bleasby Road was attracting a lot of enquiries.

“The biggest selling point is that it’s like your own private oasis, but you don’t have to drive an hour from Brisbane’s CBD,” Mr Chen said.

“It’s quite a famous street, there’s a long waiting list of people wanting to buy there. Every house in the whole street is on between 4000 sqm and 8000 sqm.”

This house at 2 Timaru Cres, Eight Mile Plains, has gone under contract for more than $1 million.
