Unique rural retreat with its own church, just 40 minutes from the city

A rural home rich in history and just 40 minutes from Brisbane has grabbed the attention of a broad range of potential buyers, with some wanting a retreat to escape the city and others looking at interesting alternative uses.

Located at Pine Mountain in Ipswich, the unique three-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 54 Stokes Road consists of a Colonial cottage adjoining an old church.

The 3.5ha property also comes with a four-car garage, tennis court, paddocks, sheds and stables.

Known as Stokes Cottage, the dwelling was built by Edward Stokes for his family after he purchased the land in 1865 and remained in the family for the next 116 years.

It was restored by the current owners after they purchased the property 40 years ago, before adding an adjoining church that they bought at auction.

The church was originally built in 1901 at Deep Creek and relocated to the Pine Mountain home before also being restored.

Agent Jackson Wales of Ray White Ipswich, who is marketing the Pine Mountain property, said the owners, who are now selling to downsize, were originally planning on using the church as a garage, but instead made it part of the home.

“They realised it was too good for that, so they converted it and it became a major feature of the property,” Mr Wales said.

“It features a high cathedral ceiling and mezzanine bedroom while retaining its beautiful church architecture.”

The cottage includes a master retreat with an ensuite, a lounge room featuring an open brick fireplace and verandas at the front and back.

Mr Wales said the peaceful rural retreat at Pine Mountain, which goes to auction next month, was attracting an enormous amount of interest from a variety of people, with enquiry pouring in soon as the property was listed.

“I’ve had calls from professional couples looking to escape the city,” he said.

“With the trend of hybrid working now on the rise, people can go west and live on rural acreage and still be connected to the rest of the world in terms of work.”

The Pine Mountain area has seen a surge in demand from people wanting to get out of the city, he said.

“It’s 30 or 40 minutes to Brisbane, and 45 minutes to Brisbane Airport, so you get the best of both worlds, with close proximity to the city but also that rural outlook and lifestyle.

“As well as residential use, I’ve also had a call from a psychologist to set up an office on the property, and people who want to buy it for the church, or use it as a wedding venue.”
